STYLE: I use subject matter the way a jazz artist uses a tune; not to render, but to explore
EVOLUTION AS AN ARTIST: Creativity was a means of survival on the farm where I grew up.We had to make the most of anything we had. Before I had art materials, I used to dig clay out of the creek and make things.
In high school, I couldn't stay out of the art room and I would paint on anything made of paper or canvas, if I had it.
If not, walls, doors, floors, odd pieces of furniture, drapes. In the beginning, I tried to paint the image I had in my head.
When I found the painting veering off in unexpected directions, I would worry, "What would people think of it?"
Over time I learned that the image I start out with in my head can only be a jumping off point.
To get lost in the painting " to let it create itself through me" that brings it to life.
